When planning a farewell for a loved one, it’s important to understand the different options available. One of these is understanding direct cremation, which is becoming increasingly popular. However, it’s essential to recognise that a direct cremation is not a funeral. Instead, it is a simple, unattended cremation without a service, gathering, or ceremony.
For some, this may be the preferred choice, but it’s worth considering the emotional impact on family and friends. Without a dedicated time for loved ones to come together, share memories, and pay tribute, some people may find it harder to cope with their loss. That’s why we strongly encourage open conversations with those who would be affected before making this decision.
Local Direct Cremation with Wells Funeral Services
If a direct cremation is the right choice for you or your loved one, using Wells Funeral Services can offer more support and flexibility than an online provider.
With a local direct cremation:
Your loved one is collected and cared for by our experienced professional staff at our local funeral home.
The cremation takes place at Mendip Crematorium, rather than being transported long distances.
We offer the opportunity for family to spend time with their loved one before the cremation.
You have the option to dress your loved one in chosen clothing or place sentimental items in the coffin.
On the day of the cremation the coffin will be transported to the crematorium in a hearse and crematoria staff will take the coffin through the chapel and place it respectfully on the catafalque.
Additionally, a local funeral director can guide you in arranging a separate memorial or gathering to honour the person’s life, helping to create a meaningful farewell in a way that feels right for you and your family.
Ashes will be returned to you in person a couple of days following the cremation
Online Direct Cremation Providers: What to Expect
Online direct cremation services are typically lower in cost but come with significant limitations. When choosing an online provider, be aware that:
Online direct cremation services can be lower in cost but come with significant limitations.
When choosing a company you see on the television (an online provider), be aware that:
Families usually do not have the opportunity to see or spend time with their loved one after they have died.
Your loved one may not be attended to before cremation (e.g., washed or dressed in chosen clothing).
The coffin, crematorium, and timing of the cremation are not typically chosen by the family.
There is no ceremony, prayers, or rituals, and no hearse or funeral procession.
The cremation may take place in another part of the country, requiring long-distance transport.
Ashes may not be returned for several weeks or longer.
Finding the Right Option for You
Choosing a direct cremation is a deeply personal decision, and we encourage thoughtful consideration of all aspects. If opting for direct cremation, and you are considering using one of the online providers be sure to ask questions regarding where before you make a decision. Such as:
Who will collect and care for your loved one?
Where will your loved one be kept?
Will they remain there or be moved to another location?
Will there be opportunity for you to spend time with them if you wish to?
Will they be washed and can they be dressed in their own clothes?
Where will the cremation take place?
Will I know when the cremation will take place?
How soon will the ashes be returned and how?
Remember a Direct Cremation is not a funeral and should not be referred to as such. And Pure Cremation is a company who deals solely in direct cremations, not a term for direct cremation.
