Unattended Cremations Can Be Personal and Local

In recent years, unattended — or direct — cremation has grown in popularity. Many families choose it for its simplicity, affordability, or to create space for a more personal farewell at a later date. But with its rise has come some misconceptions, especially about who provides these services and what they really involve. Unattended cremations can be personal and local.

It isn’t only the big national companies that provide unattended cremations

Too often, people assume unattended cremation can only be arranged through the large national companies promoted on television. These firms use words like “delicate,” “personal,” and “respectful” — but sadly, the reality doesn’t always match the promise.

When someone is placed into the care of a corporate cremation provider, they may be taken hundreds of miles away to centralised facilities. Families often cannot visit, dress their loved one in their own clothes, or place meaningful items with them. The cremation then happens without presence, without music, without ceremony — just another number on a schedule.

Unattended Cremations Can Take Place Locally

It’s worth remembering that the term “Pure Cremation” is a brand name, not a type of service. An unattended cremation simply means there is no formal ceremony at the time — but it can still be carried out in a way that is personal, respectful, and dignified.

At Wells Funeral Services, we believe even the simplest farewell deserves care, attention, and humanity.

Our unattended cremation option starts from £1,499. Your loved one is cared for locally, in our own chapel of rest. You are welcome to visit, spend time, and say goodbye in your own way. They can be dressed as you wish, with the option to include small personal belongings or tokens of love.*

On the day of the cremation, your loved one is taken to Mendip Crematorium — not miles away — and respectfully accompanied into the chapel by a member of the crematorium staff, with music of your choice played as they make their final journey. We then personally return their ashes to you within a few days.

This is what we believe unattended cremation should be: personal, local, and with quiet dignity.

At Wells Funeral Services, we offer real care — not a call centre. We know who we are looking after, and we do so with dedication and love. Choosing a simpler option should never mean compromising on respect or compassion.

If you are considering an unattended cremation for yourself or someone you love, we’re here to offer honest information, clear pricing, and a service that always feels human.

*Please note: there are some limitations on what can be placed with your loved one, as certain materials cannot be cremated. We can guide you on what is permitted.
