Our Simple Funeral Guide

Arranging a Funeral in Chilcompton, Somerset

The loss of a loved one is a difficult and confusing time. Here is our simple guide to what you need to do to organise the funeral.

What to do when someone dies

Losing someone you love can feel overwhelming. There is a lot to think about, often at a time when it’s hard to think clearly. This simple guide explains what usually happens, and how we will support you every step of the way.

1. Contact a funeral director
When you feel ready, call your chosen funeral director to arrange for your loved one to be brought into their care. If you wish, you will be able to visit them in the Chapel of Rest – many families find this a comforting part of saying goodbye. This is usually arranged shortly before the funeral.

2. Medical certificate and paperwork
If the coroner is not involved, you will need to contact the doctor who cared for your loved one to obtain the medical certificate. This allows you to make an appointment with the Registrar to register the death. Your funeral director will explain exactly what is needed and help you with the forms.

3. Registering the death
At the Registrar’s appointment, the death is officially registered and you will receive the paperwork required for burial or cremation. Simply pass these documents to your funeral director – we will take care of the rest.

4. Arranging the funeral
We will process all the paperwork and arrange the person who will lead the service, whether that is a celebrant, minister, priest or another officiant. Together, we will choose the date and shape the funeral so it reflects your loved one and your wishes.

5. On the day and afterwards
Your funeral director will manage everything on the day itself. After a cremation, the ashes are usually collected within a few days and returned to you.

Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. We are here to guide, support and care for you throughout.
